Nature lovers sometimes spend hours on end astounded by the beauty of the surroundings. Groups of riders frequent this area and keep their horses in a pen north of the house. The surroundings of the hut are well vegetated and offer good camping spots.

Where are we?

The easiest way to Álftavötn is from Skaftártunga by road F208. North of the highland center Hólaskjól, a left turn is taken to road F233. The unbridged river Syðri-Ófæra must be crossed. Those unfamiliar with the river should get information about the best place to cross the river, the warden at Hólaskjól will most likely know that. A short while after crossing the river a left turn is taken into a path leading almost to the hut, the last 200 meters must be gone by foot. The GPS-waypoints of those crossroads is N63°53,816 / W18°42,195.

Information

The Álftavötn hut is an old one used by farmers when gathering their sheep from the highlands. Members of Útivist rebuilt it some years ago, and now it is a really cosy and comfortable hut.
